LISE SARFATI (b. 1958 France) received her Master’s Degree in Russian Studies from the Sorbonne in 1979. She made picture taking her career after working as the official photographer for the Acadamie des Beaux Arts in Paris. Sarfati received grants from the Fiacre Ministère de la Culture, Paris, and Villa Médicis Hors les Murs in the 1980’s. From 1989 to 1998 Sarfati lived in Russia, doing documentary photography, some of which laid the groundwork for her later interest in focusing on the lives of young adults.  In 1997 she joined Magnum Photos and became a full member in 2001.

Lise Sarfati’s work has been the subject of exhibitions worldwide and can be found in such collections as the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Maison Europennée de la Photographie in Paris, the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Her publications include Acta Est (Phaidon, 2000), The New Life (Twin Palms, 2005), Fashion MagazineAustin, Texas (Magnum Photos, 2009), and SHE (Twin Palms, 2012). Sarfati splits her time between Paris, France and Los Angeles, California.
