Asako Narahashi

ASAKO NARAHASHI (b. 1959 Tokyo, Japan) earned a degree from the School of Letters, Art, and Science of Waseda University in 1989. She began exploring photography as an art student and in the mid-1980's she joined the photography group Photo Session led by the renowned photographer Daido Moriyama. Starting in 2001, Narahashi began the series half asleep and half awake in the water. This series captures coastal scenes from just above ad below the surface of the water. In this work it seems at any moment the swells will swallow the frame and this will be the viewer's last glimpse of the world before seemingly being swept below the tide. The disorienting semi-submerged views are mysterious, beautiful, and provide a strangely compelling perspective on landscape photography. Her work has been featured in international galleries, museums, and publications and is held in permanent collections worldwide including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She lives and works in Tokyo, Japan.
