New York
John Chiara’s New York photographs, begun in 2015, apply his hand-built camera obscura practice to Manhattan and the Hudson River Valley. Working from a truck on the street with cameras as large as 50 by 55 inches, he adapted his process to the density of the city, using vertical and horizontal diptychs to contain the view through a fixed lens. He exposed images directly onto negative-format color paper, which inverts the palette: blues turn to deep orange, and shadow turns to light. The resulting one-of-a-kind prints render the city as an otherworldly landscape of towering geometries and fragmentary close views.
