Budapest
Chiara’s Budapest photographs, known as Dust of Angels (2019), were made during an artist residency at the Budapest Art Factory, his second there after a first residency in 2017. Chiara focused on Angyalföld, the city’s 13th district, whose name translates as “dust of angels.” He drove an enormous camera around the neighborhood in the bed of a pickup truck and exposed color negatives directly onto paper. The vertical, portrait-format prints, some paired as diptychs, record the district’s twin houses, panel housing blocks, and landmarks. Their saturated, inverted color gives the architecture a textural, ephemeral quality and sets the city’s past against its ongoing transformation.
