Autorretratos

Across her career, Graciela Iturbide has periodically turned the camera on herself, producing a body of self-portraits distinct from the community-based projects for which she is best known. These images place Iturbide within the same visual language she applies to her subjects elsewhere: spare black-and-white compositions, an attentiveness to symbolic objects, and settings drawn from the desert landscapes and domestic interiors that recur throughout her work.

Rather than functioning as biographical record, the self-portraits extend Iturbide's long-standing interest in the relationship between photographer and photographed. Appearing on her own terms, sometimes obscured, masked, or merged with the landscape around her, she positions herself as both observer and observed, a counterpoint to the outward-facing documentary practice that defines the rest of her work.
